The most dramatic moment of the Great Migration. From July to October, millions of wildebeest and zebra gather at the Mara River in the Northern Serengeti near Kogatende. The river crossings are one of the most filmed and photographed events in the natural world. Three nights in the north gives you the best chance of witnessing this spectacle.
This safari combines the iconic river crossings with the Central Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Midrange lodges and tented camps throughout ensure comfort in some of Tanzania's most remote and rewarding wilderness areas.
Depart Arusha after breakfast and drive to Tarangire National Park (approximately 2.5 hours). Full day of game driving among massive elephant herds, tree-climbing lions, and ancient baobab trees. The Tarangire River draws wildlife from across the region. Overnight at Farm of Dreams Lodge or Marera Valley Lodge in Karatu.
Drive through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend into the Serengeti. Afternoon game drive in the Central Serengeti, home to excellent year-round wildlife including large lion prides, cheetahs, and resident herds. Overnight at Serengeti Heritage Camp or Thorn Tree Camp.
Drive north through the Serengeti toward Kogatende, near the Mara River. The landscape changes dramatically as you enter the hilly northern region. Game driving en route with opportunities to spot wildlife along the way. Arrive at your camp near the river in the late afternoon. Overnight at Mara Heritage Camp or Baobab Mara Camp.
A full day at the Mara River crossing points with packed lunch. River crossing activity depends on the herds' movements, and patience is rewarded. When the crossings happen, the spectacle is extraordinary. Predator encounters are frequent as lions, crocodiles, and hyenas patrol the banks. Overnight at the same camp.
Another full day at the river crossing points. Having a second day at the Mara River significantly increases your chances of witnessing a major crossing. The Northern Serengeti also offers excellent wildlife beyond the crossings, with large herds and active predators. Overnight at the same camp.
Final morning game drive in the Northern Serengeti before driving south toward the Central Serengeti. Game driving en route through changing landscapes. Afternoon in the Seronera area. Overnight at Serengeti Heritage Camp or Thorn Tree Camp.
Morning game drive in the Central Serengeti before driving to the Ngorongoro Highlands. Arrive in the late afternoon with spectacular views from the crater rim. Overnight at Rhino Lodge or Ngorongoro Farm House.
Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater early in the morning for a half-day safari on the crater floor. The crater is home to approximately 25,000 large animals including lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, and the endangered black rhino. After lunch, drive back to Arusha. Drop-off at your hotel or Kilimanjaro International Airport.
