The definitive Tanzania migration safari. Ten days following the herds from the southern plains to the Mara River crossings, with every major park included. The exact route adapts to where the herds are at the time of your visit. This is for travellers who want to see it all.
Whether you travel during calving season in Ndutu, the westward push through the Grumeti, or the dramatic river crossings in the north, this itinerary is built around the migration's current position. Midrange lodges and tented camps throughout keep you comfortable across ten extraordinary days of wildlife viewing.
Depart Arusha after breakfast and drive to Tarangire National Park (approximately 2.5 hours). Full day of game driving among the massive elephant herds, tree-climbing lions, and ancient baobab trees that define this park. The Tarangire River draws wildlife from across the region. Overnight at Marera Valley Lodge or Farm of Dreams Lodge in Karatu.
Drive through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and into the Serengeti. Depending on the season, you will head to the Ndutu calving grounds (December to March) or the Central Serengeti (April to November). The route follows the herds. Overnight at Ndutu Heritage Camp or Serengeti Heritage Camp.
A full day following the migration herds with packed lunch. Your guide will take you to the areas with the highest concentration of wildlife based on the latest reports and local knowledge. Expect large herds, predator activity, and unforgettable landscapes. Overnight at the same camp.
Continue through the migration route. Depending on the season, this may involve calving on the southern plains, the westward movement through the Grumeti, or tracking herds toward the northern river crossings. Every day brings new wildlife encounters. Overnight at seasonal camp location.
Move through the Serengeti following the migration's path. Continued wildlife viewing through varied landscapes, from open plains to wooded river valleys. The Central Serengeti offers excellent year-round resident wildlife alongside the migrating herds. Overnight at Serengeti camp.
Another full day tracking the herds and predators with packed lunch. The Serengeti's vastness means every game drive reveals something new. Lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and wild dogs are all possible alongside the massive herds. Overnight at the same camp.
Drive north through the Serengeti toward the Kogatende area and the Mara River. The landscape becomes increasingly hilly and dramatic. Beautiful scenery and game driving en route. Overnight at Mara Heritage Camp or Baobab Mara Camp.
A full day near the Mara River and the northern plains. During river crossing season (July to October), you may witness the herds crossing the river in dramatic fashion. Outside crossing season, the Northern Serengeti still offers exceptional wildlife and far fewer vehicles. Overnight at the same camp.
Final morning game drive in the Serengeti before the long drive south to the Ngorongoro Highlands. Arrive in the late afternoon with spectacular views from the crater rim. Overnight at Rhino Lodge or Ngorongoro Farm House.
Descend into the Ngorongoro Crater early in the morning for a half-day safari on the crater floor. The crater is home to approximately 25,000 large animals including lion, elephant, buffalo, hippo, and the endangered black rhino. After lunch, drive back to Arusha.
