Kilimanjaro Rongai Route approaching from the north near the Kenya border

7-Day Rongai Route Trek

7 Days / 6 Nights Moderate From $1,700 per person

The Only Northern Approach

The only route approaching Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenya border. Rongai is the driest route and the best choice during the rainy season. Quieter than Machame or Marangu, with a gentle, steady incline and views of the Kenyan plains. A true wilderness experience.

The northern slopes of Kilimanjaro see far fewer trekkers, giving this route a remote, expedition feel. The ascent passes through pine forest and moorland before reaching the dramatic Mawenzi Tarn beneath the jagged Mawenzi Peak. The descent follows the Marangu route, giving you a completely different perspective on the mountain.

Your Itinerary

1Day

Rongai Gate (1,950m) to Simba Camp (2,625m)

Drive from Arusha to the Rongai Gate near the Kenya border (approximately 4 hours). The trail begins through cultivated farmland before entering pine forest. The gentle incline and shaded path make for a pleasant first day. Arrive at Simba Camp with views across to Kenya. 8km, 3-4 hours. Elevation gain: +675m.

2Day

Simba Camp to Kikelewa Camp (3,630m)

Continue through moorland with views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The vegetation transitions from forest to heath as you climb. The trail is quiet and you may have the path entirely to yourself. Arrive at Kikelewa Camp in a sheltered valley. 6km, 5-6 hours. Elevation gain: +1,005m.

3Day

Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn (4,330m)

Climb steeply through moorland and into the alpine zone. The dramatic Mawenzi Peak rises above you, its jagged spires and dark rock faces creating a spectacular backdrop. Camp at Mawenzi Tarn, a small alpine lake beneath the peak. 4km, 4-5 hours. Elevation gain: +700m.

4Day

Mawenzi Tarn to School Hut/Kibo (4,750m)

Cross the lunar landscape of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. An acclimatization hike in the morning is followed by the trek across the alpine desert to School Hut near Kibo. Rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt. 6km, 4-5 hours. Elevation gain: +420m.

5Day

Summit Night, School Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Depart at midnight for the summit. Climb by headlamp through the darkness to Gilman's Point on the crater rim, then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Watch the sunrise over the continent. Descend via the Marangu route to Horombo Hut. 20km, 12-16 hours. Elevation gain: +1,145m / descent: -2,175m.

6Day

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Descend through moorland and back into lush rainforest. The contrast with the barren summit zone is striking. Collect your summit certificate at Marangu Gate and transfer back to Arusha. 20km, 5-7 hours. Descent: -1,880m.
