The most popular route on Kilimanjaro. Machame, known as the "Whiskey route," takes you through five distinct climate zones from lush rainforest to arctic ice. The 7-day itinerary uses a "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization strategy, giving you the best chance at the summit. Scenic, varied, and deeply rewarding.
The route ascends from the south and traverses beneath the Southern Ice Field before summiting from Barafu Camp. The famous Barranco Wall scramble is a highlight that rewards you with incredible views. Descent is via the Mweka route through pristine rainforest.
Drive from Arusha to Machame Gate. Trek through dense montane rainforest with towering trees, hanging moss, and the sounds of birds and colobus monkeys overhead. The trail is well-defined but can be muddy. Arrive at Machame Camp on the edge of the moorland zone. 11km, 5-7 hours. Elevation gain: +1,360m.
Leave the forest behind and climb through heath and moorland. Giant heather and groundsel dot the landscape. As you gain altitude, views of Kibo peak emerge ahead and Mount Meru appears behind you. Reach the Shira Plateau, one of Kilimanjaro's three volcanic cones. 5km, 4-6 hours. Elevation gain: +840m.
The key acclimatization day. Climb to the Lava Tower at 4,630m then descend to Barranco Camp at 3,950m, the classic "climb high, sleep low" strategy. The terrain shifts from moorland to alpine desert and back. You may feel the altitude at Lava Tower; the descent brings relief. 10km, 7-8 hours. Elevation gain: +790m / net: +110m.
The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall, a steep rock scramble that looks intimidating but is manageable with hands and feet. The reward at the top is one of the finest views on the mountain. Continue along ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp. 5km, 4-5 hours. Elevation gain: +45m (with significant ups and downs).
A shorter day through barren alpine desert. The landscape is stark and lunar. Arrive at Barafu Camp (meaning "ice" in Swahili) in the early afternoon. Rest, eat, and prepare for the midnight summit attempt. Your guides will brief you on what to expect. 4km, 4-5 hours. Elevation gain: +678m.
Depart around midnight. Climb by headlamp through the darkness, one deliberate step at a time. Reach Stella Point on the crater rim as dawn breaks, then traverse the glaciers to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa. Celebrate, take photos, then begin the long descent to Mweka Camp. 17km, 12-16 hours. Elevation gain: +1,222m / descent: -2,795m.
Final descent through lush rainforest. The air grows warmer and thicker with every step, a welcome change after days at altitude. Collect your summit certificate at Mweka Gate. Transfer back to Arusha. 10km, 3-4 hours. Descent: -1,460m.
