Lemosho approaches from the west through pristine rainforest, crosses the scenic Shira Plateau, and joins the Machame route for the summit push. The western approach through untouched rainforest is home to black-and-white colobus monkeys and a rich variety of birdlife. The Shira Plateau offers some of the most dramatic views on the mountain before the route joins the southern circuit for the final days to the summit.
Drive from Arusha to Londorossi Gate on the western side of Kilimanjaro. Register and begin trekking through lush, pristine rainforest. This section sees very few trekkers and feels truly wild. Ancient trees tower overhead as the trail winds gently upward to Big Tree Camp. 7km, 3-4 hours. Elevation gain: +680m.
Climb out of the rainforest into moorland with giant heather and lobelia. The trail opens up to reveal the vast Shira Plateau stretching ahead. Views of Kibo peak dominate the skyline. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp on the plateau with panoramic views in every direction. 8km, 5-7 hours. Elevation gain: +1,060m.
The crucial acclimatization day. Climb to the Lava Tower at 4,630m, where you may feel the effects of altitude for the first time. Then descend to Barranco Camp at 3,950m, the "climb high, sleep low" approach that prepares your body for the summit. 10km, 7-8 hours. Elevation gain: +790m / net: +110m.
Start with the famous Barranco Wall scramble, hands-on rock climbing that looks daunting but is manageable and exhilarating. The views from the top are among the best on the mountain. Continue along undulating ridges to Karanga Camp. 5km, 4-5 hours. Elevation gain: +45m (with significant ups and downs).
A shorter day through stark alpine desert. The vegetation has all but disappeared and the landscape is lunar. Arrive at Barafu Camp in the early afternoon. Rest and prepare for the midnight summit push. 4km, 4-5 hours. Elevation gain: +678m.
Depart around midnight for the summit push. Climb by headlamp through scree and rock to Stella Point on the crater rim. Traverse past glaciers to Uhuru Peak as the sun rises over Africa. Celebrate at the Roof of Africa, then descend to Mweka Camp. 17km, 12-16 hours. Elevation gain: +1,222m / descent: -2,795m.
Descend through beautiful rainforest. The warm, thick air is a welcome change after days at altitude. Collect your summit certificate at Mweka Gate and transfer back to Arusha. 10km, 3-4 hours. Descent: -1,460m.
